"Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. It is, after all, mostly little, common things that make up our lives."

Our Brood of Butterflies

Ashlynn received a Butterfly Pavilion from Uncle Stan and Aunt Kathryn for her birthday. We immediately ordered the caterpillars. Over the next few weeks, we observed the life cycle of a butterfly.

These are the caterpillars starting to attach to build their cocoons.

We transferred the cocoons into the pavilion, and waited (impatiently)!

The emerging of the Painted Lady Butterflies was neat to see. On the side, you see the empty cocoons. The butterflies had just emerged and were still pumping their wings to strengthen them.

Ashlynn released 9 of the 10 butterflies. One of them had a broken wing, and could not fly very well. She is currently keeping that one in her room. We have been feeding the injured using sugar water and orange slices.

She really enjoyed holding the butterflies.

We have even seen a few of them flying around our house since we released them!
